Lomen Family Papers, 1850-1969.

The Lomen family papers consist of personal correspondence, subject files, business records and correspondence, speeches, photographs, scrapbooks and other matierials relating to the family's business and and social activities. An extensive amount of the materials relate to the reindeer industry. The papers include correspondence with public figures such as explorers Stefansson and Amundsen; Gudbrand Lomen's court case calendar, legal opinions and published articles; Alfred Lomen's legislative papers, radio broadcasts and speeches; material relating to an effort to have Ralph Lomen appointed governor of the Territory of Alaska; a large collection of photographs and two reindeer films; and the personal papers of individual members of the Lomen Family.

While on an Arctic exploration, Amundsen's ship, the Maud, was disabled by a broken propeller off the Siberian coast. He requested assistance from Captain Claude S. Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born on November 3, 1879 in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1897-1902. He was voted the best orator in 1900, and also worked for the school newspaper. In 1930 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, only the third such degree awarded. He then transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1903 with a degree from the School of Liberal Arts. He next enrolled at Harvard, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1...

Gudbrand J. Lomen (1850-1934), an attorney in Minnesota, joined the Gold Rush to Nome in 1900 and subsequently established several businesses with his five sons, including the raising and processing of reindeer meat. His son Carl (1880-1965) worked so energetically in the reindeer industry, promoting marketing throughout the United States, that he became known as "The Reindeer King."
